Thanksgiving always feel extra special to me because my birthday usually falls near it. This year, however, it actually falls on holiday. Like many people, I get reflective and a bit more introspective as I step into a new age and take stock of my life so far. When I think back over the past 43 years, one overwhelming feeling emerges: gratitude. Though every life is filled with ups and downs, I can’t help but feel so thankful for this life of mine that is filled with happiness and love. However, I recently realized that I don’t express this as often as I should, both internally and to those around me. This year, my biggest goal for myself is to express my gratitude more often and I plan on doing so daily in a few small ways.

Write a “Just Because” Note

A surprise note or postcard sent to someone unsuspecting often mean more to the recipient than you’ll ever know.

Give Thoughtful Thank-You

Grocery store clerks, baristas, and restaurant workers hear “thank you” countless times a day, often out of habit. Pause for an extra moment and let them know you truly appreciate them. Sincerity stands out.

Spread Kind Offerings

One of the sweetest ways to show gratitude is through a small act of service. Run an errand for someone, bring over a warm drink, or surprise a friend with freshly baked cookies. These simple gestures let the recipient know you see them and are thankful for them.

Take a Daily Gratitude Photo

You may not always have your journal handy when gratitude strikes. Snapping a quick picture of something you’re thankful for — the morning light, a cozy corner, your pet’s sleepy face — is an easy way to capture the moment before it drifts away.

As I step into this new year of my life, I want gratitude to not just be a feeling, but a practice and a way of life. I hope these small gestures inspire you to do the same, and to notice just how much goodness is already filling your life.

There is something about the arrival of fall that makes me want to slow down and savor life a little more than usual. I want to embrace long nights and quiet days, but with how busy life can get, it sometimes feels impossible. When I feel that way, I find it helpful to turn to this list of prompts to help get into a slower mindset.

1. Think of a sound that instantly makes you pause (wind through leaves, the kettle’s whistle, your dog’s sigh). How can you invite that sound into your day more often?

2. Write about a time you were so absorbed in something gentle — folding laundry, stirring a pot, watching the sky — that you forgot the clock entirely.

3. What is one change you could make to your daily routine to make life feel calmer?

4. If you could press “pause” on one tiny moment today — a sip of tea, sunlight on the wall, the hush before sleep — which would you choose?

5. What is something you love to do by hand rather than getting help from technology or an appliance?

6. What is a smell that never fails to make you close your eyes and inhale deeply? How can you add more of this to your home?

7. Go on a long walk, and rather than listen to music or an audiobook, let your mind wander. Where does it land?

8. What is a task you tend to rush through that you could take more time and do it intentionally?

9.How would you most like to spend a day with no obligations and the only goal being to slow time down as much as possible?

10. How has embracing a slower pace changed your life for the better?

Who doesn’t find themselves with a case of the Sunday Scaries every now and then? Though Sundays are often known as a day to rest, I can find it hard to relax as the weekend winds down and my mind starts to shift to all that awaits me Monday morning. I think of all I could be doing to get ahead and somehow find myself already feeling behind. In an effort to calm the feelings of unease that begin to creep up, I’ve started to romanticize my Sundays, filling the day with tasks that will help me feel prepared to start a new week, but done so in a way that I look forward to, rather than dread.

Now, I wake up a little slower on Sundays, lingering in bed to read a little and snuggle with our sleepy dog while the coffee brews. I leave my phone on its charger while I pad out to the living room and light a candle to signify the start of a new day and enjoy my drink while working on the day’s crossword. Once our dog has finally emerged from the bedroom, I take my coffee outside and sit on the porch while she plays in the grass for a spell.

Then it is time to start my chores, which I now look at as rituals rather than something to rush through. I turn on some music and pull out the beautiful notebook I use just for planning our meals for the week. I think about our favorite dinners and enjoy choosing which ones will nourish us in the coming days. As the music continues to play, I tidy up each room a little, thankful that this is something we stay on top of each day, so there’s not much to do.

Before heading to the grocery store, I strip the bed and put its linens in the washing machine. I finish my trip to the store in the floral section, carefully choosing which bouquet I’ll be dividing up to spread around the house that week, making sure there are enough to put some in each room. I reward myself for getting through my to-do list by heading to a coffee shop or the local brewery for a solo reading date and to work in my reading journal.

Evening is reserved for softness: a delicious dinner, a long shower, fresh pajamas, maybe a favorite movie or TV show we’ve seen a hundred times. And then we head to our freshly made bed to read until our eyes get heavy before turning off the lights.

I don’t try to “beat” the Sunday Scaries anymore. Instead, I meet them with softness. With intention. I let Sunday be less about doing and more about being. Because the truth is, Mondays will always come. But how I welcome them is entirely up to me. And when I fill my Sundays with calm, I no longer step into the week feeling behind — I step into it already whole.

I am a creature of habit; I always have been. Fortunately, my husband is one as well. We find comfort in the simple routines we’ve established over the course of our relationship. When it comes time to decide how we want to spend our free time, we have a handful of options we usually turn to. Do we want to eat at the local dive where we’re sure to run into the other regulars who frequent it? Should we walk over to the craft brewery by our house where we’ve developed close friendships with the employees there because of the years my husband worked as a brewer? Or do we just want to grab some takeout, turn on some of our favorite YouTube channels, and relax?

This all changed this year when my husband pursued his dream of opening a restaurant, and I found myself with a lot of free time on my hands while he was working around the clock. I felt a little lost and out of sorts at first without our routines, but then I decided to lean into the change. I knew the long hours wouldn’t last forever, so why not enjoy my chance to spend my time just as I wanted? I could watch whatever shows I felt like, read all day if I wanted to … the choices were limitless.

Self-Discovery

Photo by Lucia Postike | Bella Grace Issue 40

It’s been a year of learning to embrace change (something that isn’t easy for me), and in doing so, I’ve discovered a lot about myself in the process. Some of these things are:

  • I really enjoy going somewhere alone to read while enjoying a meal or sipping on a delicious beverage. It’s perhaps my favorite way to spend time by myself.
  • I shouldn’t be afraid of calling up a friend or texting them to see if they’d like to do something when I’m feeling lonely. Most of the time they’re thrilled to get asked.
  • Absence really does make the heart fonder. I eagerly await whatever time I get to spend with my husband.
  • I can still frequent our regular places even if I do so by myself or with a friend.
  • It can be fun to say yes to new things with new people. This is something that can be difficult for an introvert such as myself since a lot of times I’d like to just stay in the comfort of my own home, but I’ve agreed to hiking trips and pottery classes with a new friend, and I’m so happy I did.

Now that the restaurant has been open for more than a year, my husband is around a lot more, and, of course, I’m thankful for that. But switching up how I spend my time has felt so rewarding that I’m weary of slipping back into all of our old routines. So, I’m continuing to say yes to new things while making time for the old. Life really is a never-ending search for balance, isn’t it?

Life’s a Beautiful Journey

Over the past 10 years, we’ve had 40 different Bella Grace covers. Though the featured image changes with each issue, as do the coverlines that shine a spotlight on some of our most intriguing stories, something important remains the same. On each issue, you’ll see the tagline, “Life’s a Beautiful Journey.” Have you ever stopped to think about what that means?

Most magazines have a tagline that explains what it’s about, and when we were conceptualizing Bella Grace, coming up with ours was something we put a lot of thought into. The pages of Bella Grace contained so much heart and soul and we wanted everyone to know that it wasn’t just another women’s lifestyle publication, but how do you do that in just a few words?

At its core, Bella Grace has always aimed to capture the beauty to be found in life, whether it’s celebrating the good times or finding the glimmers of hope in the bad. We knew we wanted to highlight just how beautiful life can be while also acknowledging that it’s a cycle of highs and lows.

It came to us: what is life if not a journey? From the day we are born, each of us is set on a path we must navigate. We travel from destination to destination, both physically and mentally, creating connections with others, learning valuable lessons from our experiences, and carrying it all with us throughout the years. There are twists and turns, setbacks and stumbles, victories and celebrations, and we might not know our final destination, but along the way, there is so much beauty to be found. Our mission has always been to help our readers find that beauty, even when it feels impossible. It’s been an honor to do so for the past 10 years, and we look forward to continuing our beautiful journey together for many years to come.

Celebrate life’s beauty with Bella Grace magazine.

Most of us have, at some point, made it a goal of ours to start a gratitude practice, usually in the form of a journal. We also likely followed the same guidelines, winding down at night by writing three things we were grateful for that day. And, if you’re like me, you overthought it, wrote down the same things each day — something broad and unspecific — and became bored with the routine.

Gratitude Journals: A Smaller Take

After reading “Little Pieces of Hope: Happy-Making Things in a Difficult Word” by Todd Doughty, I was moved to have fun with my gratitude practice. You see, the author wrote a book full of some of the most tiny, yet specific things for which he was grateful. Things like “Having the remote control all to yourself,” “Mastering the eyelash curler,” and “Funny-shaped ice cubes.” Of course, I have big things in my life to be grateful for, like my health and a stable job that I love. But there are also so many things I encounter or experience every day — most of them so small and seemingly insignificant — that I am thankful for, but by waiting until the end of the day to acknowledge and appreciate them, I will likely forget them by the time I pull out my journal.

To help with my journey to create a gratitude practice that was all my own, I’ve turned to technology, something I rarely do. Throughout my day, when something sparks joy in my heart or makes me feel grateful for experiencing it, I make a voice note right away. I say things into my phone like, “Silly socks peeking out from a business suit,” and “A piece of chocolate so decadent it made me close my eyes for a moment.” I dusted off my journal, and each night I listen to the notes I left myself throughout the day, smiling as I write them down, happy to revisit the things that brought me such joy.

Sure, some of these things might seem silly, and perhaps in some ways they are, but on those days when it’s hard to feel grateful for much of anything, I’m especially thankful for these tiny joys that serve as big reminders that there is still happiness to be found all around me. And the more I make an effort to express my gratitude for them, the more I find them.

Small Moments of Joy

Here are some of the small moments of joy I wrote in my gratitude journal last week, one that was especially stressful:

  • The stray cat on our street stopping in front of me to ask for belly rubs
  • Customers and crew at my local market singing “Happy Birthday” to a 5-year-old girl wearing her special birthday dress
  • A thunderstorm that came and went in a matter of minutes
  • The driver of the car next to me listening to my favorite song from eighth grade
  • A few dollars in my wallet when the ice cream truck came down our street
  • Perfectly painted fingernails
  • The bright citrusy smell of a perfectly ripe clementine
  • Babies wearing silly sunglasses
  • Five of the same cars (in the same color) being parked in a line

Tell me, what have been some of your recent little pockets of gratitude?

Leap Year: 10 Ways to Spend Your Extra Day

Every four years, we’re gifted with something special: a bonus day. Though we think you should always make time for yourself, this leap year, we encourage you to set aside an entire extra day so you can spend it however you want. Discover in this blog some of our favorite ideas. Choose a few to do, or do them all.

Why We Have Leap Years

The concept of leap years traces its roots back to the ancient Romans. A leap year every four years helps synchronize our calendar with the Earth’s orbit around the sun. But it isn’t just about adjusting our calendar; it’s also a time when cultures celebrate in unique ways.

The extra day in a leap year symbolizes a pause, a chance to step outside the everyday routine and reflect on the extraordinary beauty of life. In some traditions, women are encouraged to take the initiative and propose to their partners on February 29th. Others consider the leap day a day of good luck and a time to embark on new adventures or make life-changing decisions.

Leap Year: 10 Ways to Spend Your Extra Day

10 Ways to Spend Your Extra Day

  1. Spend the day in bed. Pull on a fresh pair of pajamas, gather up some books and snacks, and the TV remote. Sneak in a nap or two for ultimate relaxation.
  2. Pretend it’s summer. Turn up the heater, throw on a sundress, and paint your toenails a bright, sunshiny color.
  3. Gather with friends. Call up those people you never get a chance to see and put aside a few hours to spend with them. Go out for lunch, or consider hosting a potluck at your house.
  4. Go somewhere new in your town or city. It can be easy to stick to the same restaurants, stores, and even parks. Visit a new-to-you place where you live.
  5. Watch your favorite movie. Many of us feel the need to keep up with all the new pop culture. Dim the lights, grab a blanket, and turn on your go-to feel-good movie.
  6. Do a puzzle. They’re good for your mind, and there’s nothing quite like the feeling of putting the final piece in place.
  7. Cook something that takes all day. How often have you said you wanted to make a certain meal but you just don’t have the time? Now’s your chance.
  8. Take a break from social media. We all need to reset from time to time. You won’t miss anything. We promise.
  9. Pamper yourself. Take an extra long bath or shower. Use the good salts and scrubs. Put on a face mask. You’ve earned this break.
  10. Watch cute animal videos online. Just a few videos filled with puppies and kittens are sure to bring a smile to your face.

Vision Boards and Mood Boards

As the year draws to a close, there seems to be a natural inclination for introspection and anticipation that stirs within us. The impending transition to a new year – a fresh start, as some would hope – amplifies our desire to set goals and project our hopes into the future. These aspirations, albeit personal, don’t have to only be in our heads. Vision boards and mood boards can make them tangible. Read on to learn more about these visual tools.

The Difference Between Vision Boards and Mood Boards

While vision boards and mood boards share the common thread of visual expression, each serves distinct purposes. A vision board is a tangible representation of specific achievements or experiences you aim to bring into your life. It’s a roadmap for the future, a collection of images and words that magnetically draw you toward your envisioned success.

On the other hand, mood boards transcend the specificity of goals, diving deep into your emotions and aesthetic preferences. Unlike vision boards, which focus on goals, mood boards encapsulate a vibe, a feeling, or a theme you want to embody in a particular area of your life, be it a creative project, a room design, or your style.

Vision Boards

Since the release of the 2006 self-help book and film The Secret, which introduced the law of attraction to the masses, vision boards have risen in popularity. These boards stem from the belief that, by envisioning yourself already there, health, wealth, and happiness can come from such positive thinking – if you visualize it, it’ll come. This belief is something that influential thought leaders like Gabrielle Bernstein, Deepak Chopra, and Oprah all agree, hence why the boards have become even more popular.

Vision boards – or dream boards – are often collages of quotations, pictures, or other visuals that convey your goals and aspirations. As a tool for manifesting those goals, these boards focus on a specific theme or period and are highly personalized.

Vision Boards

Types of Vision Boards

Although there are many different types of vision boards, below are three main themes.

Goal Boards

This type of vision board focuses on a specific goal, like fitness training or saving money. It can include inspirational pictures, infographics, motivational quotes, and even worksheets to keep track of your progress visually.

Theme Boards

Theme boards are less specific and focus on a life theme you want to come to fruition. These tend to revolve around special interests or more long-term goals. A theme board, for example, can be about your relationship goals or professional aspirations.

Reflection Boards

Reflection boards center around personal development and inner growth. You learn more about yourself and what makes you happy with these boards. They can also help lift your mood. For instance, you may make a reflection board filled with uplifting imagery to deal with the winter blues.

Why Vision Boards Can Be Effective

Besides being a fun arts and crafts project, vision boards are mental practices, and these, according to Psychology Today, increase confidence, motivation, and even motor performance while reducing stress. Research suggests that, compared to other types of stimuli, the brain tends to put a higher value on visual imagery. Visual representations are usually more memorable than words. Because of that, your vision board may stick out in your mind more than a to-do list.

There’s nevertheless a problem with vision boards. When people assign their dreams to a vision board, more often than not, they stop exerting effort to get what they want. They instead wait for the universe to deliver those wants. Research shows that visualizing positive outcomes without the hard work it takes can hinder achievement and performance. So, vision boards may hinder growth rather than fuel it.

How to Create Your Vision Board

Creating a vision board is a deeply personal and creative endeavor. It involves a combination of self-reflection, goal-setting, and artistic expression.

Step 1: Clarify Your Goals and Aspirations

Take a moment for introspection before diving into the creative process. Define both short-term and long-term goals across various aspects of your life. Consider your health, personal development, career, and relationships. This first step lays the foundation for the words and images on your vision board.

Step 2: Gather the Necessary Materials

Prepare by gathering materials for your vision board. For those opting for a physical board, collect magazines, scissors, glue, and a sturdy board or poster. For those choosing a digital approach, explore online platforms or apps that allow you to curate a virtual vision board with images and text. Having all your materials ready makes it easier for you to focus on the visual representation of your goals.

Step 3: Thoughtfully Select Images and Words

The heart of your vision board lies in the images and words you choose. Flip through magazines or browse online sources, carefully selecting visuals that resonate with your goals and evoke positive emotions. Choose words and phrases that encapsulate the essence of your aspirations.

Each element should contribute to a narrative that inspires and motivates you. Trust your intuition during this process. The connection between your chosen elements and your vision is crucial for the board’s impact.

Step 4: Organize and Personalize Your Board

With your chosen elements in hand, it’s time to arrange them on your board. Experiment with different layouts, considering thematic sections or an arrangement based on the various areas of your life.

This step is not just about visual appeal. It’s an opportunity to infuse your board with personal touches. Include photographs, handwritten affirmations, or any other elements that hold significant meaning to you. The more personalized your vision board is, the more meaningful and inspiring it becomes.

Step 5: Ensure Visibility, Activation, and Regular Engagement

Place your completed vision board in a visible location – whether in your personal space, bedroom, or office. Creating a vision board is just the initial step. The key to its effectiveness lies in consistent activation. Here are some strategies to maximize the impact of your vision board:

  1. Regular Visualization: Spend a few minutes daily focusing on your vision board. Close your eyes and imagine yourself living the life depicted on the board.
  2. Affirmations: Complement your visualizations with affirmations that reinforce the positivity and achievement associated with your goals.
  3. Goal Breakdown: Segment your long-term goals into smaller, actionable steps. Use your vision board as a roadmap, guiding you through each milestone.
  4. Gratitude Journaling: Cultivate a mindset of gratitude by keeping a journal. Regularly jot down the progress toward your goals and acknowledge the positive changes in your life.
  5. Vision Board Updates: Life is dynamic – so are your goals. Periodically revisit and update your vision board to reflect changes in your aspirations or circumstances.

Mood Boards

While vision boards are for goal-oriented visualization, mood boards tap into your emotions and aesthetic preferences. Around the 1970s, mood boards became a popular brainstorming tool in advertising and fashion. These boards are a compilation of images, colors, fonts, and textures that collectively convey the project’s mood, tone, and aesthetic.

Creating a mood board starts with a theme or emotion you want to evoke. Are you aiming for a sense of tranquility, excitement, or sophistication? Collect images, colors, textures, and even fabrics that resonate with this theme. The beauty of mood boards lies in their versatility – they can be physical or digital, private or shared. They’re not limited to professional use. Anyone looking to convey a certain vibe can benefit from the mood board process.

Believe in the value of vision boards and mood boards or not, there’s truth in the power of visualization, self-awareness, and positive thinking. At Bella Grace, we believe an ordinary life can be extraordinary and that there’s magic in the everyday. Self-Compassion

Did you know the Latin root that the word “compassion” originated from means “to suffer with”? Compassion is an empathetic emotional response to someone’s suffering that makes you want to ease that person’s condition. Throughout your life, you may have shown compassion to countless people. But have you consistently extended that same level of kindness to yourself?

It can be hard to be kind to yourself often, especially if your automatic reaction is to criticize and be harsh. But that’s okay, as self-compassion is a skill. And you can practice that skill over time. Read on to learn more about self-compassion and how you can cultivate it.

What Is Self-Compassion?

Self-compassion means treating yourself with kindness and concern when you fail, make mistakes, or experience adversity. According to Kristin Neff, PhD, it involves:

  • Being mindful of painful feelings and thoughts.
  • Remembering you’re not alone – suffering and imperfection are part of the shared human experience.
  • Treating yourself with kindness when experiencing pain or failure instead of being harshly self-critical.

Self-Compassion and Resilience

It’s easy to think if you aren’t self-critical and hard on yourself enough, you won’t be able to achieve your goals. This misconception is due to the common belief that negative self-talk will result in better performance next time.

As Harvard Business Review points out, a self-critical attitude leads to the judgment of self and others rather than the joy, meaning, and connection we all need to be whole and healthy. Such harshness only gives you a pessimistic view of your potential. Self-compassion, not self-critique, is the key to being resilient.

Self-Compassion and Self-Esteem

Self-Compassion and Self-Esteem

Although self-compassion and self-esteem both involve feelings of self-worth, there are differences. Self-esteem revolves more around feelings of pride, shame, triumph, and despair, with high self-esteem involving comparing yourself more favorably to others and vice versa.

On the other hand, self-compassion is acknowledging that everyone struggles at times. You also don’t rely on achievements and other external sources of validation to feel valued. Self-compassion, because of that, is more constant than self-esteem.

Why Self-Compassion?

“The human heart is phenomenal with its capacity to embrace the spectrum of love’s expressions. There also exists the capacity for self-love and self-compassion. When we forgive ourselves and our shortcomings, laugh at our minor mistakes, see ourselves in the mirror and smile with admiration, and perhaps gift ourselves with time to enjoy life, we increase our boundless love for others and the world.” – Diane Sigala from Bella Grace Issue 23

As you practice self-compassion, you’ll likely feel more motivated to persist and attain your goals. That’s not to mention a myriad of other positive outcomes, including:

How to Practice Self-Compassion?

1. Art as a Catalyst for Self-Compassion

There’s a powerful yet often overlooked method for fostering self-compassion: artistic self-expression. Engaging in creative pursuits, whether through visual arts, writing, music, or other forms of expression, provides a unique avenue for self-discovery and healing.

Artistic expression allows you to externalize your internal struggles, giving form to emotions that may be challenging to articulate verbally. If you’re looking for a creative pursuit that seamlessly blends artistry, writing, and personal reflection, check out our Art Journaling magazine, where you can learn to capture your life through art.

2. Mindfulness: Embracing the Present Moment

One of the foundational pillars of self-compassion is mindfulness – to be present without judgment. Mindfulness enables you to observe your emotions and thoughts without attaching undue significance to them. It acts as a gentle guide, steering you away from self-criticism.

Regular mindfulness practices like conscious breathing provide a space for introspection. These practices can help you recognize your thoughts and emotions without getting entangled.

3. RAIN: Recognize, Allow, Investigate, and Nurture

Developed by meditation teacher and psychologist Tara Brach, RAIN is an acronym representing a four-step process that guides you through moments of emotional difficulty. Recognizing involves acknowledging and identifying the emotions at play. Allowing encourages a non-judgmental acceptance of these emotions. Investigating entails delving deeper into the emotions to understand their roots and impact. Finally, nurturing involves offering yourself kindness and compassion in the face of emotional challenges.

Applying RAIN to self-compassion means approaching your own emotional struggles with the same care and understanding you would extend to a friend.

4. Loving-Kindness Meditation

Loving-Kindness meditation, or “Metta” meditation, is a powerful tool for cultivating compassion towards yourself. This practice is to direct positive intentions inward to yourself and outward to others, even to those you may have difficulties with. By repeating phrases that express goodwill, you’ll gradually develop a sense of warmth and empathy.

5. Compassion-Focused Therapy

Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is a therapeutic approach developed by psychologist Dr. Paul Gilbert, designed to promote self-compassion. CFT integrates cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness and attachment theory to create a holistic framework for personal growth.

The treatment focuses on developing a compassionate mindset by challenging self-critical thoughts and nurturing a sense of self-worth. It encourages you to become a supportive and understanding inner companion yourself.

Questions for Cultivating Self-Compassion

1. We often put so much focus on being kind toward others that we forget about ourselves. Treating yourself with kindness and grace will make it easier to treat others the same way. We’re so quick to offer random acts of kindness to the different people in our lives. What are some of those acts that you can extend to yourself?

2. It can be hard to praise ourselves. We don’t want to come across as cocky or arrogant. What are three things you absolutely love about yourself?

3. It’s easy to think of ways to surprise our loved ones with little goodies to lift their moods or reward them for a victory. We need to treat ourselves too! It doesn’t have to be anything lavish or expensive. It can be something as simple as allowing yourself to snooze for another 15 minutes or buying that pint of ice cream you’ve been craving. What are some of your favorite small ways to treat yourself?

4. We’re so quick to think about all the things we’d like to change about ourselves, from our appearance to certain personality traits. What are all the things you’d never change about yourself?

5. Think of some of the ways you show your friends how much you love and appreciate them, like a surprise treat on their doorstep or an unexpected note tucked into their purse. What are some of the ways you can show yourself the same sort of appreciation?
