Thanksgiving always feel extra special to me because my birthday usually falls near it. This year, however, it actually falls on holiday. Like many people, I get reflective and a bit more introspective as I step into a new age and take stock of my life so far. When I think back over the past 43 years, one overwhelming feeling emerges: gratitude. Though every life is filled with ups and downs, I can’t help but feel so thankful for this life of mine that is filled with happiness and love. However, I recently realized that I don’t express this as often as I should, both internally and to those around me. This year, my biggest goal for myself is to express my gratitude more often and I plan on doing so daily in a few small ways.

Write a “Just Because” Note

A surprise note or postcard sent to someone unsuspecting often mean more to the recipient than you’ll ever know.

Give Thoughtful Thank-You

Grocery store clerks, baristas, and restaurant workers hear “thank you” countless times a day, often out of habit. Pause for an extra moment and let them know you truly appreciate them. Sincerity stands out.

Spread Kind Offerings

One of the sweetest ways to show gratitude is through a small act of service. Run an errand for someone, bring over a warm drink, or surprise a friend with freshly baked cookies. These simple gestures let the recipient know you see them and are thankful for them.

Take a Daily Gratitude Photo

You may not always have your journal handy when gratitude strikes. Snapping a quick picture of something you’re thankful for — the morning light, a cozy corner, your pet’s sleepy face — is an easy way to capture the moment before it drifts away.

As I step into this new year of my life, I want gratitude to not just be a feeling, but a practice and a way of life. I hope these small gestures inspire you to do the same, and to notice just how much goodness is already filling your life.

Self-Compassion

Did you know the Latin root that the word “compassion” originated from means “to suffer with”? Compassion is an empathetic emotional response to someone’s suffering that makes you want to ease that person’s condition. Throughout your life, you may have shown compassion to countless people. But have you consistently extended that same level of kindness to yourself?

It can be hard to be kind to yourself often, especially if your automatic reaction is to criticize and be harsh. But that’s okay, as self-compassion is a skill. And you can practice that skill over time. Read on to learn more about self-compassion and how you can cultivate it.

Table of Contents

What Is Self-Compassion?

Self-compassion means treating yourself with kindness and concern when you fail, make mistakes, or experience adversity. According to Kristin Neff, PhD, it involves:

  • Being mindful of painful feelings and thoughts.
  • Remembering you’re not alone – suffering and imperfection are part of the shared human experience.
  • Treating yourself with kindness when experiencing pain or failure instead of being harshly self-critical.

Self-Compassion and Resilience

It’s easy to think if you aren’t self-critical and hard on yourself enough, you won’t be able to achieve your goals. This misconception is due to the common belief that negative self-talk will result in better performance next time.

As Harvard Business Review points out, a self-critical attitude leads to the judgment of self and others rather than the joy, meaning, and connection we all need to be whole and healthy. Such harshness only gives you a pessimistic view of your potential. Self-compassion, not self-critique, is the key to being resilient.

Self-Compassion and Self-Esteem

Self-Compassion and Self-Esteem

Although self-compassion and self-esteem both involve feelings of self-worth, there are differences. Self-esteem revolves more around feelings of pride, shame, triumph, and despair, with high self-esteem involving comparing yourself more favorably to others and vice versa.

On the other hand, self-compassion is acknowledging that everyone struggles at times. You also don’t rely on achievements and other external sources of validation to feel valued. Self-compassion, because of that, is more constant than self-esteem.

Why Self-Compassion?

“The human heart is phenomenal with its capacity to embrace the spectrum of love’s expressions. There also exists the capacity for self-love and self-compassion. When we forgive ourselves and our shortcomings, laugh at our minor mistakes, see ourselves in the mirror and smile with admiration, and perhaps gift ourselves with time to enjoy life, we increase our boundless love for others and the world.” – Diane Sigala from Bella Grace Issue 23

As you practice self-compassion, you’ll likely feel more motivated to persist and attain your goals. That’s not to mention a myriad of other positive outcomes, including:

Self-Compassion and Resilience

How to Practice Self-Compassion?

1. Art as a Catalyst for Self-Compassion

There’s a powerful yet often overlooked method for fostering self-compassion: artistic self-expression. Engaging in creative pursuits, whether through visual arts, writing, music, or other forms of expression, provides a unique avenue for self-discovery and healing.

Artistic expression allows you to externalize your internal struggles, giving form to emotions that may be challenging to articulate verbally. If you’re looking for a creative pursuit that seamlessly blends artistry, writing, and personal reflection, check out our Art Journaling magazine, where you can learn to capture your life through art.

2. Mindfulness: Embracing the Present Moment

One of the foundational pillars of self-compassion is mindfulness – to be present without judgment. Mindfulness enables you to observe your emotions and thoughts without attaching undue significance to them. It acts as a gentle guide, steering you away from self-criticism.

Regular mindfulness practices like conscious breathing provide a space for introspection. These practices can help you recognize your thoughts and emotions without getting entangled.

3. RAIN: Recognize, Allow, Investigate, and Nurture

Developed by meditation teacher and psychologist Tara Brach, RAIN is an acronym representing a four-step process that guides you through moments of emotional difficulty. Recognizing involves acknowledging and identifying the emotions at play. Allowing encourages a non-judgmental acceptance of these emotions. Investigating entails delving deeper into the emotions to understand their roots and impact. Finally, nurturing involves offering yourself kindness and compassion in the face of emotional challenges.

Applying RAIN to self-compassion means approaching your own emotional struggles with the same care and understanding you would extend to a friend.

4. Loving-Kindness Meditation

Loving-Kindness meditation, or “Metta” meditation, is a powerful tool for cultivating compassion towards yourself. This practice is to direct positive intentions inward to yourself and outward to others, even to those you may have difficulties with. By repeating phrases that express goodwill, you’ll gradually develop a sense of warmth and empathy.

5. Compassion-Focused Therapy

Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is a therapeutic approach developed by psychologist Dr. Paul Gilbert, designed to promote self-compassion. CFT integrates cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness and attachment theory to create a holistic framework for personal growth.

The treatment focuses on developing a compassionate mindset by challenging self-critical thoughts and nurturing a sense of self-worth. It encourages you to become a supportive and understanding inner companion yourself.

Questions for Cultivating Self-Compassion

1. We often put so much focus on being kind toward others that we forget about ourselves. Treating yourself with kindness and grace will make it easier to treat others the same way. We’re so quick to offer random acts of kindness to the different people in our lives. What are some of those acts that you can extend to yourself?

Prompt from Field Guide to Everyday Magic Issue 9

2. It can be hard to praise ourselves. We don’t want to come across as cocky or arrogant. What are three things you absolutely love about yourself?

Prompt from Field Guide to Everyday Magic Issue 10

3. It’s easy to think of ways to surprise our loved ones with little goodies to lift their moods or reward them for a victory. We need to treat ourselves too! It doesn’t have to be anything lavish or expensive. It can be something as simple as allowing yourself to snooze for another 15 minutes or buying that pint of ice cream you’ve been craving. What are some of your favorite small ways to treat yourself?

Prompt from Field Guide to Everyday Magic Issue 10

4. We’re so quick to think about all the things we’d like to change about ourselves, from our appearance to certain personality traits. What are all the things you’d never change about yourself?

Prompt from Field Guide to Everyday Magic Issue 12

5. Think of some of the ways you show your friends how much you love and appreciate them, like a surprise treat on their doorstep or an unexpected note tucked into their purse. What are some of the ways you can show yourself the same sort of appreciation?

Enjoyable Daily Journaling

Journaling is a powerful method for fostering creativity and personal growth, not just for self-reflection. It provides a haven for expressing thoughts and emotions, setting objectives, and tracking progress. However, for many people, daily journaling can seem dull or daunting. To make daily journaling more enjoyable, here are 10 tips to help you get started and stay committed.

10 Journaling Tips for a Delightful Daily Habit

1. Choose the Right Journal

One of the first steps to making daily journaling enjoyable is selecting the right journal. The type of journal you choose should resonate with you and suit your preferences. Consider factors like size, paper quality, binding, and design. Some prefer traditional leather-bound journals, while others may opt for digital journaling apps. Experiment with different options until you find one that feels comfortable and inspiring.

2. Set Realistic Expectations

When starting a daily journaling practice, you should set realistic expectations. Understand that you don’t need to write a lengthy entry every day. Instead, commit to a manageable goal, like spending 10-15 minutes each day on journaling. Setting achievable expectations will make it easier to maintain your journaling habit while reducing the pressure.

3. Find Your Writing Time

Pick a specific time that works best for you to journal. Morning Pages is a well-known practice of filling three pages with your stream-of-consciousness thoughts each morning. Some people likewise prefer to write first thing in the morning to set intentions for the day. But if you find it more therapeutic to reflect in the evening, do so.

Experiment with different times and determine when you feel most inspired and relaxed. Consistency is key. So try to stick to your chosen time as much as possible.

4. Create a Relaxing Environment

Make your journaling experience more enjoyable by creating a comfortable and relaxing environment. Find a quiet, clutter-free space where you can focus without distractions. Try adding soothing elements like soft lighting, calming music, or a cup of tea.

5. Use Prompts and Templates

If you ever feel stuck or unsure about what to write, using prompts or templates can be immensely helpful. These prompts can help you explore new ideas, emotions, and perspectives. With that, your journaling sessions can be much more enjoyable and insightful.

You can find in magazines, apps, and websites questions or themes to guide your writing. Field Guide To Everyday Magic, for instance, is filled with worksheet-style prompts alongside captivating photographs. This interactive workbook provides journaling space for readers to respond directly on its pages. Moreover, with its compact size, you can easily slip it into your bag or purse to take it anywhere. Click here to check it out.

6. Mix Text and Visuals

Journaling doesn’t have to be limited to words on a page. Try adding visuals like sketches, doodles, or photographs to your journal. Visual elements can help you express yourself in various ways and make your journal more visually appealing. You can also include clippings from magazines, ticket stubs, or other mementos that hold significance to your daily experiences.

7. Embrace Imperfection

One of the biggest obstacles to enjoyable journaling is the fear of making mistakes or writing poorly. It’s essential to remember that your journal is a private space, and there are no rules or judgments. Allow yourself to make spelling errors, cross out words, or write messy entries. Your journal is for you, and it being imperfect is perfectly fine.

8. Write About Gratitude

Writing about gratitude can elevate your mood and rekindle your thoughts, especially on those weary days when self-doubt looms. It need not be complex. Begin with whatever is within your reach – whether it’s the view from your balcony or the comfort of your morning coffee. Then, delve into a detailed exploration of your emotions.

Rather than attempting to fill pages with an exhaustive list of things you’re grateful for, consider honing in on a select few. This way, you can truly immerse yourself in the feeling of gratitude.

9. Reflect and Celebrate

Incorporate moments of reflection and celebration into your journaling routine. Take time to acknowledge your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Celebrate your progress, personal growth, and the steps toward your goals. Reflecting on your accomplishments can be satisfying and motivate you to continue journaling.

10. Share Your Journey

While daily journaling is primarily a personal practice, sharing your journey with others can add another layer of enjoyment and accountability. You can share select entries or insights with a trusted friend, family member, or a supportive online community. Discussing your journaling experience with others can provide valuable perspectives, encouragement, and motivation to continue.

Daily journaling doesn’t have to be a chore. With the right mindset and techniques, it can be delightful and transformative. Remember to review your journal entries periodically and adjust your journaling practice. Consider what’s working well and what isn’t. Are there specific prompts or formats you enjoy more than others?

Presentness

In a world that seems to be spinning faster each day, where schedules morph into never-ending to-do lists, the idea of living in the present moment can feel like an elusive dream. Yet, beneath the chaos and cacophony, there’s still an open invitation to savor the exquisite beauty of presentness. In this age of hurry, let us rediscover the art of mindfulness and create pockets of tranquility amidst the frenzy.

Table of Contents

The Essence of Presentness

At its core, presentness is about being fully aware of the present moment without judgment or distraction. It involves embracing the now, irrespective of the circumstances, and acknowledging the richness of each experience. As a result, it enables us to detach from the past’s regrets and the future’s anxieties.

Picture this: the aroma of a steaming tea cup dancing with your senses and its warmth seeping into your soul. As you take that first sip, yesterday’s worries and tomorrow’s uncertainties gently fade away, leaving you in a cocoon of serenity. This is the essence of presentness – the art of finding joy in the ordinary and letting time stretch its arms wide.

Why is Presentness So Hard to Attain?

The Roots of Disconnection

From right when we wake up to when we fall asleep, our lives intertwine with technologies, social media, and countless responsibilities. Conveniences, yes, but also a culture of perpetual distraction. We’re so accustomed to splitting our attention that we rarely experience activities with our whole presence.

When we eat, we’re scrolling through our smartphones. When we work, we’re checking emails in between tasks. New messages flood our inboxes, and our smartphones beep with notifications. As a result, we find ourselves caught in a cycle of constant busyness, often losing sight of the here and now.

The Illusion of Multitasking

Multitasking has become a badge of honor in today’s society. We pride ourselves on juggling multiple tasks simultaneously, believing this makes us more productive.

However, research has shown that the human brain is not well-suited for efficient multitasking. Instead, it rapidly switches between tasks, leading to a decrease in overall efficiency and an increase in stress levels. This constant mental shifting prevents us from fully immersing ourselves in any single activity, eroding our connection to the present.

The Power of Presentness

The fast-paced nature of modern life compounds the challenge of presentness. It demands constant motion, but in this constant motion, we may lose the essence of life’s richness.

Presentness: A Lifeline Amid Chaos

Yet, amid this chaos, the pursuit of presentness offers a lifeline. It’s about consciously choosing to disentangle ourselves from the web of distractions. Presentness means practicing mindfulness by focusing on our breath, sensations, and thoughts.

Mindfulness encourages a non-judgmental observation of our experiences, helping us break free from the chains of automatic reactions and judgments. It fosters a deep awareness of the present. By cultivating this skill, we can navigate the swift currents of the modern world with greater clarity and calmness.

5 Benefits of Presentness

To be present is to engage with our surroundings, thoughts, and emotions without judgment. This state of mind offers multiple benefits:

  1. Reduced Stress: Presentness, encapsulated in mindfulness, interrupts the cycle of stress-triggered reactions. Mindfulness anchors attention in the present, allowing for emotional regulation and a calmer mind. Eckhart Tolle’s “Power of Now” underscores its potential to ease stress by distancing us from past-future concerns.
  2. Enriched Creativity: When we focus solely on one task, thoughts flow more freely, and insights emerge organically. Mindfulness practices, like meditation, improve our ability to perceive nuances. By grounding ourselves in the now, we open the door to fresh perspectives, uncharted ideas, and a reservoir of untapped creativity.
  3. Strengthened Relationships: How often have we been in the company of someone physically present yet mentally distant? Nowadays, the ability to truly engage with those around us has become a rare gift. The art of listening communicates respect, empathy, and love. It bridges the gap between people and fosters a sense of belonging essential for emotional well-being.
  4. Increased Productivity: Contrary to the myth of multitasking, dedicating our attention to a single task leads to higher-quality work. Not to mention, this heightened concentration can accelerate task completion and bring about more efficient decisions.
  5. Heightened Senses: When we’re present, we notice the subtleties of life that often go unnoticed. Imagine wandering through a sun-dappled forest, the earthy aroma of damp soil accompanying our every step. As we trace the contours of a tree’s bark with our fingertips, we’re no longer a spectator. We’re an active participant in the ballet of life.

8 Ways to Be More Present

The question arises: How can we reclaim presentness in a world that seems determined to pull us away from it? The answer lies in intentionality, discipline, and a conscious reevaluation of priorities.

1. Grounding Techniques: The Five-Senses Check-In

Grounding techniques involve using the senses to connect with the present. Practice five-senses check-in. Name one thing you taste, two things you smell, and three things you hear. Then, think of four things you touch and five things you see.

This exercise shifts your focus away from your thoughts and into your immediate environment. Engaging your senses helps with presentness and prevents your mind from wandering.

2. Body Scan Meditation

Body scan meditation involves a mental assessment of your body, starting from your head and descending to your toes.

Lie down or sit comfortably in a peaceful environment. Close your eyes and gradually shift your focus to different parts of your body. Take note of any sensations of relaxation, discomfort, or tension. Not only does this exercise develop a heightened sensitivity to your body, but it also relieves stress.

Bella Grace Magazine

3. Mindful Breathing

One of the simplest yet impactful methods for presentness is mindful breathing. Allot a brief moment to close your eyes, find a comfortable sitting position, and direct your focus towards your breath. Pay close attention to the sensation of the air flowing in and out of your body. If your thoughts start straying, gently steer them back to the awareness of your breath’s rhythm. This exercise serves to soothe and quiet your mind.

4. Mindful Listening

Truly listening to others is a gift you can offer yourself, not just to them. When engaged in conversation, practice being fully present with the speaker. Put aside your internal commentary and truly hear what they’re saying. Presentness through mindful listening deepens connections and enriches your interactions.

Presentness Practices

5. Daily Gratitude

Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant in your life. Each day, take a few moments to reflect on what you’re grateful for. It could be as simple as having a loving family, good health, or a safe place to call home. This way, presentness entails positivity and contentment.

6. Morning Presentness Routine

Start your day with intention. Before diving into your tasks, dedicate a few minutes to mindfulness practices such as breathing exercises, journaling, or a short meditation. Doing so sets a positive tone for the day ahead and primes your mind for a more present and centered approach.

7. Single-Tasking

Whether working, eating, or spending time with loved ones, give your full attention to one activity at a time. When eating, savor each bite and notice the flavors and textures. When working, immerse yourself in the task without distractions. By slowing down, you’re actually speeding up productivity.

8. Digital Detox

Practice mindful technology use by setting boundaries and being intentional about when and how you engage with your devices. When you receive a notification, pause before reacting. Ask yourself if it’s necessary to respond immediately or if it can wait.

Additionally, implement regular digital detoxes. Disconnect from your screens so that you can fully engage with your surroundings. This practice helps you reclaim control over your attention and prevents technology from hijacking your presentness.

As we progress through the dynamic terrain of modern life, the quest for presentness remains a timeless endeavor. If presentness is what you seek, check out our Bella Grace magazine. Bella Grace is a 160-page publication devoted to discovering magic in the ordinary.

Forest Bathing

The allure of being amidst natural wonders evokes an inexplicable feeling that soothes our souls. The rustling symphony of the forest, the earthy aroma of trees, and the play of sunlight filtering through the foliage envelop us with a sense of comfort and tranquility.

But what exactly is this feeling that is so hard to put into words?

In Japan, there is a traditional practice known as shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing. In the Japanese language, “shinrin” translates to “forest,” and “yoku” means “bath.” Therefore, shinrin-yoku refers to immersing yourself in the forest atmosphere and absorbing the natural surroundings through your senses.

In this blog, we will delve into the healing power of forest bathing and explore how it can offer you an escape from the rigors of modern life.

Table of Contents

What is Forest Bathing?

Originating in Japan during the 1980s, forest bathing is a meditative practice encouraging a deeper connection with nature. Unlike hiking or exercising, the purpose of forest bathing is not to reach a particular destination. Nor is it to engage in vigorous physical activities.

Instead, it involves slowly walking through the forest, embracing the surrounding sights, sounds, scents, and textures. The emphasis on mindfulness sets forest bathing apart from a typical nature walk.

You are encouraged to leave behind the stressors of everyday life and be fully present in the moment. As you do so with all your senses engaged, you’ll begin experiencing nature’s therapeutic benefits.

The Five Senses in the Forest

Forest bathing prompts you to engage all five senses while in the woods. Here’s how each sense contributes to the healing experience:

  1. Sight: The visual richness of the forest offers a feast for the eyes. Whether it’s the vibrant hues of green leaves or the graceful movements of wildlife, the forest provides a refreshing visual break from the urban landscape.
  2. Sound: The natural sounds of the forest, such as chirping birds and trickling streams, create a soothing auditory backdrop. These sounds have a calming effect on the mind, drowning out the noise pollution of city life.
  3. Smell: The diverse array of scents in the forest can evoke feelings of happiness and relaxation. From the earthy aroma of damp soil to that of pine, these scents can trigger pleasant memories.
  4. Touch: The texture of the forest floor provides tactile sensations that reconnect individuals with the physical world. Not to mention the roughness of tree bark and the softness of moss underfoot foster an immersive experience.
  5. Taste: Forest bathing may also involve the practice of wild foraging. It’s when you can safely sample edible plants like berries or herbs. This practice adds a delightful culinary dimension to the forest experience.

The Science Behind the Healing Power of Forest Bathing

Forest bathing has been the subject of extensive research in recent years. While the practice itself dates back centuries, modern science has provided valuable insights into its therapeutic effects.

One key component contributing to these benefits is the release of phytoncides by trees. Phytoncides are natural compounds emitted by trees and plants to protect themselves from harmful insects and pathogens.

Your body increases the activity and number of natural killer cells when you breathe in phytoncides. This effect is crucial in enhancing the immune system and even fighting cancer. And it can last for several days after the forest bath.

Forest Bathing Benefits

  1. Stress Reduction: Studies have demonstrated the significant impact of forest bathing on lowering cortisol levels, the primary stress hormone. The relaxing ambiance of the forest also stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which induces a state of calmness. So spending time in nature, particularly within the depths of forests, can help with relaxation.
  2. Improved Mood and Mental Well-Being: Not only does a lower cortisol level alleviate stress, but it also contributes to better sleep and improved mood. Forest bathing reduces symptoms associated with anxiety, depression, and various mood disorders. Altogether, the sensory stimulation, increased physical activity, and mindful presence nurture a more positive emotional state.
  3. Cognitive Advantages: Enhanced focus, creativity, and attention restoration are some additional benefits of forest bathing. The regenerative influence of nature on cognitive function is especially evident in urban environments. Here, exposure to green spaces mitigates mental fatigue and bolsters cognitive performance.
  4. Cardiovascular Health: Emerging research hints at the potential positive impact of forest bathing on cardiovascular health. There have been correlations between spending time in wooded areas and reduced blood pressure and heart rate. Because of that, forest bathing may lead to improved cardiovascular function and a diminished risk of heart-related ailments.
  5. Reduced Symptoms of ADHD: In people grappling with ADHD, spending time amidst nature has shown the potential to reduce symptoms while bolstering attention span.

8 Forest Bathing Tips

  1. Choose the Right Location: Look for forests or wooded areas with diverse plants that are easily accessible. National parks and nature reserves are great options. On the other hand, local green spaces can also be a good choice when you lack time.
  2. Pick the Right Time: Consider the time of day and season for your forest bathing excursion. Early mornings and late afternoons often offer a serene atmosphere with softer lighting and fewer visitors. Different seasons bring unique experiences. From the blossoms of spring to the vibrant colors of autumn, choose a time that resonates with you.
  3. Disconnect from Technology: Leave your phone and other devices behind or, at least, put them on silent mode. The goal is to immerse yourself fully in nature without distractions.
  4. Slow Down: Forest bathing is not about covering distance. It’s about savoring the present moment. Walk slow, pause frequently, and take your time to appreciate the environment.
  5. Engage Your Senses: As you walk, consciously engage your senses. Observe the sights, listen to the sounds, breathe in the scents, and touch the textures around you.Bella Grace Magazine
  6. Mindfulness and Meditation: Use your forest bathing time for introspection and mindfulness. Clear your mind of clutter and focus on the sensations of being in the forest.
  7. Find a Comfortable Spot to Rest: During your forest bathing journey, find a spot where you feel at ease. It could be a soft patch of grass, a moss-covered rock, or the base of a majestic tree. Take a few moments to relax, close your eyes, and allow the natural world to surround you.
  8. Solo or Guided: Forest bathing can be practiced alone or through guided experiences with a certified forest therapy guide. These guides can help foster a more profound connection with nature.

Table of Contents

What is Social Wellness?

Social wellness encompasses cultivating meaningful connections, fostering a sense of belonging, and surrounding yourself with a robust support system. In other words, it’s building and engaging in authentic, respectful, and trusting relationships. These relationships play a vital role in providing support during our challenging times and navigating the ups and downs of life.

Why is Social Wellness Important?

Social wellness is distinct from subjective and psychological well-being, yet these are intricately correlated. Over time, social wellness is a pretty good indicator of your well-being.

As you prioritize social wellness, you can build emotional resilience and navigate life’s challenges with strength and grace. And with a supportive social network, you’ll feel at ease in various social situations. Positive influences are the key to self-esteem and emotional wellness.

The Route to Social Wellness

Embarking on this journey toward social wellness, you’ll realize the surprisingly profound power you hold in nurturing your relationships. The path to social and emotional well-being offers numerous avenues for growth and improvement:

  • Put in the effort to keep in touch with supportive friends
  • Disconnect to connect – make it a routine to disconnect from screens, allowing for face-to-face communication and more meaningful interactions
  • Practice self-disclosure and active listening
  • Build a culture of respect
  • Take a moment of self-reflection to assess your social needs. What aspects of your social life bring you joy, and which areas do you seek improvement?

10 Ways to Reconnect With Old Friends

The first and most important step in reconnecting with an old friend is to reach out. Take the initiative and send a heartfelt message or make a phone call. Be genuine, reminiscing about shared memories and expressing the value their friendship holds for you. Making the first move shows that you still care and are willing to invest in the relationship.

1. Memory Lane Adventure: Plan a Nostalgic Day Trip

Social Wellness and Old Friends

Take a nostalgic trip down memory lane by planning a day trip to places filled with special meaning. Visit the neighborhood where you grew up, explore the park where you spent endless summer afternoons, or revisit the local café that was your favorite hangout spot. As you immerse yourselves in shared memories, the past will intertwine with the present, reigniting the joy of old times.

2. Surprise Snail Mail: Send a Mystery Package

Delight your old friend with a surprise snail mail package full of their favorite things or sentimental trinkets. A collection of nostalgic items, handwritten notes, or even a mixtape of songs will transport both of you back in time. The excitement of receiving a surprise package will pave the way for meaningful conversations.

3. Volunteer Together: Make a Difference as a Team

Reconnect with your old friends by giving back to the community together. Find a cause that aligns with your shared values and dedicate your time and energy to making a positive impact. For example, try volunteering at a local shelter, organizing a charity event, or participating in a fundraising campaign. The shared experience of making a difference will create lasting memories and foster social wellness.

4. Culinary Reunion: Host a Waffle Brunch

Reconnecting With Old Friends

Food has a unique way of bringing people together. So, a waffle brunch can be the perfect occasion for catching up with old friends.

To make it less burdensome on your end, each guest can prepare a dish. It can be a dish that holds significance in their friendship with you. Or, you can develop a unique menu yourself, topping it off with a DIY gourmet waffle bar. All guests need to do is show up and make their favorite waffles.

Here’s how Tara Berger, the owner of One Stylish Party, described the brunch in Mingle Spring 2023. “From sweet to savory options, I love that a waffle bar allows guests to make their waffles exactly to their liking. As another benefit, it allows you to prep and set up everything before guests arrive, freeing up more time to spend with your guests.”

“I utilized my kitchen island to style the waffle bar and filled it with platters of fresh waffles and toppings for guests to make different gourmet waffle recipes. To elevate the look of the waffle bar, I displayed hand-drawn recipe cards that guests could refer to while making their waffles. Some recipes featured in the waffle bar included: berries and cream, s’mores, caprese, and chicken and waffles.”

For more information on how to host a waffle brunch and ideas for unique gatherings, check out Mingle Spring 2023.

5. Collaborative Keepsake: Create a Friendship Scrapbook

Enter into a creative journey together by co-creating a friendship scrapbook. Gather old photographs, ticket stubs, and mementos that reflect your shared experiences. Let your imaginations run wild as you design pages with joyful captions, inside jokes, and meaningful messages. Not only does this help preserve your memories, but it also serves as a tangible reminder of your enduring bond.

6. Book Club Reunion: Start a Literary Journey

Ignite the spark of connection with the help of literature. Start a virtual or in-person book club with your old friends, selecting books that resonate with each of you. Engage in lively discussions, share your thoughts, and delve into the stories together. The intellectual and emotional connection forged through these literary journeys will deepen your friendship and provide plentiful opportunities for shared growth.

7. Wanderlust Get-together: Plan a Travel Adventure

Reconnect with old friends through the magic of travel by planning an adventure together. Choose a destination that has been on both of your bucket lists or revisit a place that holds significant memories. It can be a road trip, a hiking expedition, or an international escapade. Or it can simply be coffee on the beach or exploring a new town.

As a result, the shared experience will leave you with lasting memories and up your social wellness. In Bella Grace Issue 30, you can also discover 12 things to do in 12 hours in a new destination.

8. Fitness Challenge: Motivate Each Other to Stay Active

If both of you like staying active, what better way to reconnect than through heart-pumping exercises? Set fitness goals together and take on a fitness challenge that would improve your physical and social well-being altogether. Your shared commitment can be training for a marathon, a daily workout routine, or trying out new fitness classes together. Celebrate each other’s milestones, encourage one another during setbacks, and enjoy achieving fitness goals as a team.

9. Creative Collaboration: Engage in Artistic Expression

Tap into your creative sides and let it be a conduit for social wellness. Explore various forms of expression such as painting, mixed-media, pottery, or even writing. Plan a day where you can gather supplies, create art, and inspire each other with your unique perspectives.

This process of creating something beautiful and meaningful together will for sure deepen your connection. If you don’t know where to start, check out this free mixed-media project and tutorial from Somerset Studio.

10. Mindfulness Retreat: Find Inner Peace and Social Wellness Together

Reconnect with your old friends through a mindfulness retreat. Choose a serene location where you can engage in activities like meditation, yoga, and reflection. The retreat will provide a space for everyone to unwind, recharge, and reconnect with their true selves. Through guided mindfulness exercises, you’ll strengthen your bond with each other and create a foundation of inner peace and social wellness.

Reconnecting with old friends is like hidden treasures waiting for rediscovery. It’s a chance to bridge the gaps of time and distance. And each step brings you closer to the profound impact true friendship can have on your social wellness. This Social Wellness Month, we hope you have a wonderful time nurturing the bonds that have withstood the test of time.

Every morning I quietly slip downstairs, sometimes with my 4-year-old niece in tow, and open up the large cabinets as my eyes fall directly to the middle shelf. I have seen them all before, but today is a new day with new emotions, and I desire to feel the stir of something new. I yawn as I study the cups before me, all the while assessing my current mood for the morning.

My dainty white mug with raised ridge circles covering it is for the days I desire to feel simple, elegant, and womanly all at the same time. The pastel pink mug with faint speckles is for the cozy moments when I begin the day wearing one of my favorite knit cardigans. I can always envision the joy I will feel while pulling it close to me as my sweater in turn holds me. There is the chrome zigzag coffee cup as well. What it might be lacking aesthetically it makes up for with a tilted lip that easily forms to my lips, which makes my morning read all the more enjoyable. I can easily continue to read without so much as a glance up.

As a self-proclaimed minimalist I pride myself in finding renewed delight within a small collection of coffee cups, but my eyes are ever on the lookout for the next cup that might just be the daily inspiration I am seeking. I might be alone in my morning routine, but I would like to believe there are others out there who enjoy the small moments in life just as much as I do, and maybe, just maybe, they start out each morning picking out their perfect coffee cup too.

Standing barefoot on the wet grass, sipping coffee as the sun slowly rises

An at-home manicure that doesn’t need to be fixed

Cold breezes that make the curtains dance back and forth

The first words written in a brand-new journal

Pulling out the right number of clothes hangers on the first try

A house so quiet all you can hear is the slight trickle of coffee brewing

Stacks of books perched next to an already overflowing bookcase

A spooky movie enjoyed with the lights down low, with candles aglow

Waking up without an alarm

Eating takeout right out of the containers

The first sleep nestled in the warmth of flannel sheets

Freshly baked bread served with a bit of butter

Finding the pen that makes your handwriting look beautiful

The smell of the first rainstorm of the season

When your hair curls just right

Opening a used book and finding someone’s shopping list

Certain sights send my heart soaring, but they’re not ones you’d expect.

I like clutter. I’m not talking the “I should be on an episode of Hoarders” clutter, but the kind that is proof of a life being lived. Whenever I look around a home – whether it is mine or a dear friend’s – these messes always call out to me and fill me with warmth and joy.

  • A sofa overloaded with throw pillows and blankets

  • A cupboard filled with mugs and glasses that don’t match at all

  • An unmade bed

  • A nightstand piled high with books

  • A few pairs of shoes scattered near the door

  • A coat rack stuffed with jackets and scarves

  • The remains of a dinner party after the last guest left

  • Board games shoved into a cabinet any way they’ll fit

  • Baskets overflowing with children’s toys

  • Flour scattered around the kitchen after a day of baking

What are some sights most people would see as clutter that send you over the moon? I’d love to hear them!
