We all have those days when we wake up feeling less than chipper for no particular reason … we just feel “blah.” Whenever I’m feeling this way, it can be helpful to read encouraging or uplifting words from others, especially those that focus on keeping a positive mindset or capture how I hope to live and/or view my life. To help me start the day on a positive note, I have a collection of quotes I turn to and read to myself time and time again.

1. “It is a serious thing, just to be alive on this fresh morning in this broken world.”

— Mary Oliver

2. “Resolve to make at least one person happy every day, and then in ten years you may have made three thousand, six hundred and fifty persons happy, or brightened a small town by your contribution to the fund of general enjoyment.”

— Sydney Smith

3. “Wishing you a day of remaining in the moment. Not the past or future or story. Not your thoughts or anxieties or lists. But right here, right now, straight into the center.”

— Victoria Erickson

4. “I just don’t think I’m looking for the big moments in life anymore. It’s more the simple ones that make for a beautiful day now. Like the sun rising and the moon dancing and the wind singing and the leaves grooving, and kids laughing and music playing, butterflies twirling, heart-smiles staying … and me being present to witness all these little beautiful things. This is what makes for a happy and peaceful life, I’m sure.

— S.C. Lourie

5. “If you can’t run away to a cabin in the woods right now, start small. Make a cup of tea and find a sunset to watch. Turn off your phone and read a book in the bath. Go for a drive and blast some Stevie Nicks. Fight for moments of peace in the midst of the crazy. You can do that.”

— Brooke Hampton

6. “Do you get it now? This is your life. Not only your weekends, not only your vacation in three months, not only that big milestone you’ve been waiting for. This is it. Start fully living in the moment and giving meaning to the ‘mundane.’ This is your greatest adventure after all.”

— Meditate and Love

7. “Some days, doing ‘the best we can’ may still fall short of what we would like to be able to do, but life isn’t perfect on any front — and doing what we can with what we have is the most we should expect of ourselves or anyone else.”

— Mister Rogers

8. “Decide what kind of life you actually want. And then say no to everything that isn’t that.”

— Melanie Mackle

9. “Let us come alive to the splendor that is all around us and see the beauty in ordinary things.”

— Thomas Merton

10 “Close your eyes and imagine the best version of you possible. That’s who you really are, let go of any part of you that doesn’t believe it.”

— C. Assad

The days are getting shorter and there’s a slight chill in the air … can you feel it? Fall is just around the corner. It is a season that is romanticized by many and one we all look forward to — for very good reasons. It is a season of transformation … when the weather shifts and paints the world in stunning hues of crimson and gold.

The arrival of fall means ushering in the cozy season with nights spent by the fireplace chatting and laughing with loved ones and days filled with simple yet charming activities like apple picking and visits to the pumpkin patch. As the world basks in a golden glow, our days can’t help but feel a little more magical. Is it any wonder we all happily anticipate this season and welcome it with open arms?

Quotes to Get You Excited for Fall’s Arrival

  1. “Autumn is a place where words fall short. It is a magic that must be felt, breathed, experienced, and treasured.”
    — Laura Jaworski
  2. “October, here’s to you. Here’s to the heady aroma of the frost-kissed apples, the winey smell of ripened grapes, the wild-as-the-wind smell of hickory nuts, and the nostalgic whiff of that first wood smoke.”
    — Ken Weber
  3. “If a year was tucked inside of a clock, then autumn would be the magic hour.”
    — Victoria Erickson
  4. “Autumn is a vintage soul. She colors each leaf with wisdom’s gold.”
    — Angie Welland-Crosby
  5. “I believe in the power of a fiery autumn to dazzle my senses and fill my soul with enough brilliant beauty to last me through the grays and whites of the chilly winter days that lie ahead.”
    — Ginny Yurich
  6. “It looked like the world was covered in a cobbler crust of brown sugar and cinnamon.”
    — Sarah Addison Allen
  7. “For as long as she could remember, she had thought that autumn air went well with books, that the two both somehow belonged with blankets, comfortable armchairs, and big cups of coffee or tea.”
    — Katarina Bivald
  8. “Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.”
    — Nora Ephron
  9. “That old September feeling, left over from school days, of summer passing, vacation nearly done, obligations gathering, books and football in the air … Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last year’s mistakes had been wiped clean by summer.”
    — Wallace Stegner
  10. “Use what you have, use what the world gives you. Use the first day of fall: bright flame before winter’s deadness; harvest; orange, gold, amber; cool nights and the smell of fire. Our tree-lined streets are set ablaze, our kitchens filled with the smells of nostalgia: apples bubbling into sauce, roasting squash, cinnamon, nutmeg, cider, warmth itself. The leaves as they spark into wild color just before they die are the world’s oldest performance art, and everything we see is celebrating one last violently hued hurrah before the black and white silence of winter.”
    — Shauna Niequist
  11. “I am such an autumn person. Give me a quiet, cozy spot with a simple view of gorgeous trees with colorful leaves on a crisp September day, fuzzy socks, a warm drink, and a good book, and I will be in all my glory.”

Inspirational Quotes to Kickstart 2024

Whether you are a resolution maker or not, no one can deny the excitement of a new year and all the possibilities that come with it. It offers us a chance to turn the page on the previous year and start anew with a blank slate. As we leave 2023 behind and step into 2024 with a commitment to make this year better than the last, may we use the following quotes about new beginnings to guide us along the way.

1. “And now let us believe in a long year that is given to us, new, untouched, full of things that have never been.”

—Rainer Maria Rilke

2. “I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”

— Neil Gaiman

3. “New Year’s Day. A fresh start. A new chapter in life waiting to be written. New questions to be asked, embraced, and loved. Answers to be discovered and then lived in this transformative year of delight and self-discovery.”

— Sarah Ban Breathnach

4. “Midnight on New Year’s Eve is a unique kind of magic where, just for a moment, the past and the future exist at once in the present.”

— Hillary DePiano

5. “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.”

— Thomas Jefferson

6. “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”

— C.S. Lewis

7. “We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called opportunity and its first chapter is New Year’s Day.”

— Edith Lovejoy Pierce

On the way back to the orphanage after learning Green Gables was not to be her home, a heartbroken Anne Shirley declared, “I’ve made up my mind to enjoy this drive. It’s been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly … Oh, look, there’s one little early wild rose out! Isn’t it lovely? Don’t you think it must be glad to be a rose?” In moments of particular hardship, I often picture Anne, well aware of her ill fate, yet determined to celebrate the beauty surrounding her.

There’s another little girl I think of too. Her name is Sara Crewe and among the pages of “A Little Princess,” her optimistic spirit has touched millions of readers all around the world. Banished and without a cent to her name, she reminded us, “Somehow, something always happens just before things get to the very worst. It is as if Magic did it. If I could only just remember that always. The worse thing never quite comes.”

The only certainty regarding unforeseen circumstance is that it is likely to meet us throughout our lives. However, navigating these twists in the road is made easier with the turn of a page — with a peek inside the stories of courageous, resilient heroines.  When the midnight stars were at their dimmest, they sought out magic and where they did not find it, they created their own. In their own words, these are pieces of inspiration we can carry in our hearts when experiencing our own versions of Anne’s carriage ride to the orphanage or Sara’s nights in the attic. These are life lessons from a literary heroine.
