Thank you so very much for posting your feelings about the need and the comfort books can bring to oneself who needs or has an appetite for reading. Not too long ago a book called to me from across the pathway of the fiction section of a local book shop. The book was a biography. I bought the book without question. I didn’t even open the book to smell the pages and it sits today on my bookshelf unread. I too have so many books on the shelf unread and it depresses me. The book that seemed to leap out at me… I ask myself, why have I not read it?

I can really relate to this post. I too, have more books then I could ever possibly read but they are here for me. I love to look at them, to touch them, to fan through the pages. They are like a balm to my soul. I will continue to buy books because of my deep love for the written word and the stories.

Thank you for putting words to the feelings that explain the passions of being a reader a book collector. Books take you everywhere you want to go and to places you didn’t even know you needed to go! You’re right we don’t find them they find us!

I wanted to thank Kyle Mark Ryan who brought to mind the Japanese word “tsundoku” in your most recent issue. It summed up my feelings exactly, as does this exquisitely written piece by Ms. Hammons. Does anyone else wonder what life must be like for those that don’t, or cannot read? I agree Annie H, there should be time given to read. Perhaps it would grow understanding, empathy, creativity, and discovery in this world. Aren’t these as important to a life as food, water, and air?

In reply to Shelley. What great sentiments. I feel the exact same about my books. Some nights I awake with so much anxiety. The only thing that settles my mind is getting up and sitting in my little reading room and looking through my shelves of books. Nothing helps me more than quietly leafing through pages of all those stories.

I not only have a physical to be read pile, but online ones and a waiting list at my local library. I tell my colleagues we should all get a year sabbatical to read the books we have waiting for us. They actually think I’m joking… We know better, don’t we?..

I feel so seen! Ha. I too, am a bibliophile and ‘collect’ books that have never or barely been touched. I so resonated with the love of simply holding, seeing and feeling the energy of the book. They are like Kindred Spirits, patiently awaiting a coffee date and connection. Thanks again!
