When I walk into a home that has a cozy feel to it, with friends gathered around a table talking and enjoying one another’s company, I take note of what is so special about it and wonder how I can incorporate that into my own place.

I didn’t know there is an actual term for this until this past year when I stumbled upon an article about the Danish concept of “hygge.”

Simply put, it is a term that captures that feeling of coziness, warmth, charm, and simplicity. Helen Russell furthers the definition by adding that it is the “complete absence of anything annoying or emotionally overwhelming,” with “a focus on togetherness and prioritizing the people in your life.” Sounds pretty dreamy, right? It seems like something we all want to do.

If you’d like to practice “hygge,” here are a few things you can do. I should add this is a great way to help beat the winter blues!

Unplug. Turn off your electronic devices and spend time talking with those you share a space with.

Get comfortable. Pull on an oversized cardigan, fuzzy socks, or stay in your pajamas.

Dim the lights. Switch your light bulbs to a lower wattage. Light some candles or turn on some twinkle lights.

Stay home. Invite friends and family over for a night of good food or board games instead of heading to a restaurant.

Bundle up. There is a saying: “There’s no bad weather, only bad clothing.” Pull on the proper attire and head outdoors and go sledding or snow-shoeing.

Head to the break room. You can hygge at work too. Instead of eating lunch at your desk, gather around the break room table with your colleagues. Get to know them. Play a board game or put together a puzzle.

These are just a few ways to hygge and capture that feeling of coziness and simplicity so many of us are always seeking.
